Happy Friday the 13th!

13 Apr

via weheartit.com

Today is the second of three Friday the 13th’s happening this year. There’s a third one in July *thunder* *lightning*

In honor of this not-so-auspicious day, here are 13 ideas for your Friday the 13th itinerary:

1. Watch all of the Friday the 13th movies, except for Jason X because it takes place in outer space (and you know how I feel about movies that take place in outer space)

2. Buy a baker’s dozen of something. I’d go with cupcakes; you might choose steaks.

3. Have a party with 13 guests. Light some candles and get out the Ouija board.

4. Wear a costume, buy candy, decorate your house all creepy-like. I love Halloween and isn’t Friday the 13th really just a mini-Halloween?

5. Send someone 13 flowers, especially if they’re superstitious. Nothing says “I love you but now you must die” like a bouquet of 13 flowers.

6. Pet black cats, walk under ladders and step on cracks… just to see. It’s a science experiment.

7. Give thirteen dollars to a charity. I suggest any charity that looks after kitties or narwhals. Or an alpaca sanctuary. Here’s an article I wrote for eHow.com about reputable animal charities.

8. Get a tattoo. Lots of tattoo parlours offer cheap “13″ tattoos on Friday the 13th, so roll up your sleeve and get in line.

9. Do something healthy, like 13 yoga poses or 13 minutes of meditation.

10. Un-do your bad luck. If you’re having a bad day, try doing 13 things to counteract it: look for a 4-leaf clover, pick up pennies, hang up a horseshoe, etc.

11. Drink 13 glasses of wine.

12. Drink 13 shots of tequila (DON’T)

13. Compile a Friday the 13th playlist with 13 songs to bring you luck or 13 creepy, dark songs. I recommend Marilyn Manson or songs from Disney movies, depending on what atmosphere you’re going for…

Your Horoscope by Moi

9 Apr

I wrote your horoscope for this week (April 9-15, 2012)

Because I care.

And horoscopes are fun.

You should probably follow my advice, unless you want some sort of biblical tragedy to befall you.

Aries

Stubborn as a mule? More like stubborn as a ram! Your strong-willed nature is taking a toll on your relationships with friends and family. This week, put your ambition and creativity to good use by giving to others instead of pursuing your own goals.

Taurus

This week, practical matters take precedence over fun. Do what Taurians do best: take care of business. Your everyday life runs smoothly when it’s in order. Ditto for your love life, you passionate bull!

Gemini

Flexible Gemini, the juggler of the Zodiac! You have many balls in the air this week (literally? sexually? metaphorically?…) Strive for balance by adapting to your surroundings. Diligence at school or work and fun at home is the key to a successful week.

Cancer

It’s time to come out of your shell, Cancer! Get out of your comfort zone. Order something different at the coffee shop and don’t forget to flirt with that cute barista. Next week, you can rest comfortably in your shell, but this week is for taking risks.

Leo

It’s time to hang back and let someone else take the lead. You don’t always have to be the alpha-lion. This week, relax and observe instead of dominating social situations. When you make time to listen, others will want to share their feelings with you.

Virgo

Take a break from over-analyzing! A Virgo who spends all their time thinking has no room left for feeling. This week, get in touch with your emotions. Think with your heart instead of your head (regardless of what you know about human anatomy) and people will see you differently.

Libra

It’s time to shake thing up, Libra. This week you should eat a cupcake, fly a kite and color outside the lines! A little creativity will get you out of your routine and help you to think outside the box. Your boss might even thank you.

Scorpio

Be careful with your stinger, Scorpio! Think before you act this week. Keep your anger in check until you can calmly speak your mind. Be compassionate instead of passionate and friends will flock to you.

 Sagittarius

Kick up those hooves, Sagittarius! Stop philosophizing and start acting. Your arrow can only hit the target if you choose to aim. Your success in any endeavor depends on action, so get moving this week.

Capricorn

A healthy Capricorn knows not to take criticism personally. This week, let the negativity of others role off your shoulders. The weight of the world is not yours to carry and if you’re patient, you’ll achieve your goal.

Aquarius

Aquarians are prone to armchair humanitarianism. You care deeply but laziness gets in the way of action. This week, take a stand. You’re magnetic when you share your passions and interests with others.

Pisces

This week, take a break from helping others. Your friends, family and associates often treat you like their personal psychologist. Enough is enough. This fish needs to swim.

Have a great week, readers (who I’m now going to affectionately refer to as Hippity Hops)

Happy Ostara!!!

20 Mar

Today is the first day of spring and the Pagan sabbat Ostara! Sooo paint some eggs, eat some chocolate and pet a bunny, like the Goddess Eostre would want you to…

Alexander Skarsgård and Other Reasons to like Sweden

14 Mar

His eyes are weirdly hypnotic... I think I'm turning into a sex zombie.

No need to thank me.

You’re totally welcome for the violently beautiful Swede located at the top of this post.

Ya, I just picked a random photo out of my wedding album. Whatever. No big deal.

Anyways… Guess what I just found out?

Sweden is amaaazing! About 4 people from Sweden visit my blog each day. So, to my Swedish readers I’d like to say:

Hej! Hur mår du?

I happen to know a little Swedish. It has nothing to do with cyber-stalking A. Skars…

Guess what else I found out?

You know what they have in Sweden?

EASTER WITCHES!!!!!

Finally! A reason for that useless holiday! #blasphemy (I’m totally tweeting that. Don’t steal it.)

Evidence:

Precariously dangling a leashed man over shark infested waters. I like her style. Oh wait. Those might be foggy rooftops. Meh, either way. Side note: "Oh Wait Those Might Be Foggy Rooftops" would totally be the name of my autobiography. Coming to an iPad near you, "Oh Wait Those Might Be Foggy Rooftops: The Randi Bergsma Story"

I’m told by the internet that Easter in Sweden is similar to Halloween in Canada/United States/maybe Britain, in that children dress up as witches and go door to door collecting candy in adorable copper pots. You can read more about it here.

And that, ladies and gentleman, is why you read my blog. #Education

It’s My Birthday!!!

10 Mar

I’m 25 years-old today!

An entire quarter of an entire century.

I think I’m going to thr0w up…

Happy International Women’s Day!

8 Mar

Image

How should you celebrate International Women’s Day?

1. Call your mother, sister, daughter, mentor, hero or friend.

2. Donate to V-Day and end violence against women and girls.

3. Read amazing literature written by women. I suggest Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath and Hayden Herrera (who wrote the biography of Frida Kahlo.)

4. Look at photos of your feminist heroes. Be inspired. Example:

Image

The young man standing on the far left in the suit is Frida Kahlo. She liked to wear mens clothes sometimes. Pretty brave for a 20 year-old Mexican woman in the early 1930's.

5. Break up with your shitty boyfriend.

6. Wear a dress. Feel grateful that you’re wearing it by choice. Some women’s aren’t so lucky.

7. Stand up for what you believe in. Don’t want to have babies? Don’t believe in marriage? Support LGBT rights? Say it. Out loud. To other people.

8. Masturbate

9. Rent a movie with a strong female lead. Feel angry that there are only like 5 of them.

10. Look into gender politics in your area. Find out about your abortion, sexual health and birth control rights. These things matter.

11. Look into the rights of women in other countries. The Congo is a good place to start. Read Nicholas Kristof’s articles. Here’s a good one on reproductive rights in Texas. Excerpt:

“The state of Texas is waging war on women and their families,” Dr. Boyd added. “The new law is demeaning and disrespectful to the women of Texas, and insulting to the doctors and nurses who care for them.”

12. Get mad. Get PISSED. Then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Donate. Write a blog post. Petition your local government. Volunteer at a women’s shelter. Mentor a girl. Stop watching reality TV. Take off your makeup. Refuse to be silent.

13. Be kind. Be brave. Be strong.

Leap Year Myths and Superstitions

29 Feb

I don't know what the pictorial equivalent of Leap Day is, but I'm assuming this is close.

Today is Leap Day!

The 29th of February has a feminist history that dates back to the Middle Ages. Historically, Leap Day was the only day when a woman could propose marriage to a man. If the man refused her, he’d have to buy her a substantial gift, like a donkey or a pretty dress (I’m guessing.) Aside from marriage, Leap Days were considered to be a time when gender roles were reversed and women were sexually liberated for 24 hours.

The moral of this story is that Leap Day should really be called “Female Orgasm Day.”

So, why don’t you go celebrate.

NOW.

It is the Time of Our Sign (and a quick lesson in astrology)

20 Feb

from etsy.com

Today is February 20th, meaning the Sun has entered Pisces!

Because I am a proud and stereotypical Pisces, I thought I’d share a few links with you. Chances are, you have a Pisces in your life that you’d like to better understand. Or, even better, you are a Pisces yourself!

We are also the sign of the water lily.

Here’s a really accurate overview of the Pisces Sun sign. (You can find great articles about other astrological signs on this site as well. Just type it into the search box.)

Pisces Correspondences:

Planet: Neptune

Plants:

  • Aloe
  • Bay
  • Cotton
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Rue
Tree: willow
Flowers: lilac, lavender, water lily, daffodil (jonquil,) any water plant or early bloomer, like tulips.
Element: water, obviously
Animals: fish, starfish and various other aquatic animals. Also, water birds (storks, swans) and mammals (otters, whales, dolphin)
Stones: amethyst, pearl, coral, aquamarine
Colours: purple, aqua, sea foam, navy, any watery colour
Anatomy: blood, veins, lymphatic system, feet
Gods/Goddesses: Neptune, Venus, and Crone Goddesses like Hecate.
Chakra: 7th, crown chakra
Mythical Creatures: mermaids, sirens, sea monsters
A Quick Note on Astrological Correspondences
It’s pretty easy to see the connections between the correspondences. Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac, occurs during February/March and is represented by the fish. Therefore, every correspondence has to do with water (aqua, Neptune, blood, pearl, etc) or being “last” (Crone Goddesses, feet, 7th chakra) or seasonal occurrences (early flowers, purple – February’s colour)
You can easily apply this to your own zodiac sign. Aries, for example is the first sign in the zodiac so it is symbolic of:
The Top: as in the first of everything, cardinal numbers, best, strongest, etc
The Head: as in headstrong, opinionated, thoughtful and wisdom as embodied by owls and other associated creatures.
It is also a fire sign, so you’ll find lots of red correspondences (root chakra which is also the 1st chakra, red stones, colour red)
That’s how correspondences work. SO, why don’t you take your own Sun Sign and think about:
a. the time of year and seasonal occurrences
b. the animal association or the element
c. your birthstone
See if you can make the connections yourself. It’s actually pretty easy and, once you get the hang of it, you’ll begin to see that there is a beautiful symbolic language that has existed throughout time and permeates every aspect of every culture.
Pretty amazing, right?

It’s Valentine’s Day! (facts, superstitions and other malarkey)

14 Feb

Happy Tequila Day…. ahem…. Valentine’s Day to my awesome readers! I love all the ladies (and gentlemen?) who walk the hallowed halls of Bunny Sunday!

Here are some very interesting facts about Valentine’s Day, compliments of Ye Olde Toronto Sun.

Valentine’s customs and superstitions

Fun, witchy Valentine’s potions and spells can be found over at Gypsy Magic (I loooooove this site)

Hate Valentine’s Day? So did Al Capone (who, btw, was born on my birthday) so here’s an article on the Valentine’s Day Massacre

And now I will try to avoid clichéd Valentine’s images:
