It’s the End of the World (and Yule)

yule

Happy Yule!

Today (December 21st) we celebrate the longest night of the year and the return of the Sun as the days begin to lengthen.

For witchy/New Age/metaphysical people, today is an especially celebratory occasion. It marks the end of a 5,125 year cycle in the Mayan calendar and the beginning of a new reality.

It’s very esoteric and “Crazy Psychic Lady” but basically, we magical folks/weirdos/sages think that a new era is dawning. This era could be called the Age of Aquarius or the 4th Dimension Reality and it pretty much means that humanity will turn away from the greed and violence that have characterized the current era (the Age of Pisces) and embrace a more peaceful existence.

Humans will put down their weapons and re-connect with nature. We’ll learn to trust our intuition instead of our smartphones. We’ll embrace other cultures as part of our Global Village. There’s already evidence of this mindset in the “eco-friendly” and “local eating” movements, as well as certain political advances for human rights.

Here’s an article on the Mayan beliefs about December 21st and how people are reacting.

It all sounds like the talk you’d hear on a hippie commune but it’s interesting, yes?

Shop Re-Design and News

I’ve been very busy this month. I re-designed my Etsy Shop and I created a new PDF template for my readings:

I’m in the middle of a re-brand, switching over accounts to the Randi Minerva name. I’m working on a new website as we speak. It will be unveiled in the New Year, but for now, please check out the new shop. There are tarot readings available for as low as $5 and gift certificates for the Holidays.

Change is good.

31 Days of Halloween – Day 31: HALLOWEEN!

Today is the day. THE DAY. We lived to see another beautiful All Hallows Eve. How should you/we/I celebrate this horrifying occasion? I have a few suggestions:

  • Watch horror films. Kate Hudson movies don’t count. (I still love her.)
  • Eat all the chocolate. All. Of. It.
  • Drink red wine from a fancy glass, like Dracula but without the blood.
  • Walk around in costume. Let your inner Creepy Weirdo out to play.
  • Scare children. Somewhere between “sleep with the lights on” and “scarred for life.”
  • Visit a cemetery. Pay your respects.
  • Go to 8tracks and listen to Halloween playlists.
  • Be nice to cats. I hope you do this everyday, but especially today.
  • Film yourself lip synching Rocky Horror songs and send me the video. Watch this for inspiration:
  • Make a magic potion. By “magic potion” I mean “tequila.”
  • Paint your nails black, especially if you’re a dude.
  • Cast spells. Go ahead. What could possibly go wrong?
  • Invite that cute girl over. Ask her to play Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board *wink*
  • Dress your pets up in costumes. DO IT. Send me pictures.
  • Throw bat-shaped confetti in people’s faces. That’ll shut them up. Don’t try this on your husband/boss/mom.
  • Ouija the shit out of that board.
  • Meditate. You’re going to need that inner peace to deal with your family over the holidays.
  • Watch paranormal shows and take a shot every time someone says “Did you hear that?” You’ll be drunk in 20 minutes.
  • Eat black licorice. It’s the best. Don’t even try to tell me otherwise.
  • Bloody Mary. The mirror game or the drink. Your choice.
  • Tell ghost stories. Everybody has a ghost story.

Happy Halloween! Blessed Samhain!
XOXO

31 Days of Halloween – Day 29: October Moon Meaning

Tonight, October 29th, is the full moon. Not that anybody can see it with Frankenstorm descending upon the East Coast. Still, the October full moon is special this year because it occurs so close to Halloween. The moon is powerful three days before and three days after the date on which it reaches 100% fullness, meaning there will be tons of magical moon energy around on Halloween night.

Here are some correspondences for you to use during your rituals, parties and other All Hallow’s activities:

Name: The Blood Moon… also Falling Leaf Moon or Shedding Moon (depending on the culture)

Colors: Black, silver, dark purples and blues, orange, gold

Stones: black stones like obsidian and tourmaline (to banish negative energies while the veil is thin) and psychic power stones like amethyst, moonstone or quartz (to help your divinations or to contact the dead)

Foods/Herbs: traditional autumn foods like apples and pumpkins, herbs associated with psychic powers and protection (parsley, sage, rosemary. thyme… like the Simon and Garfunkel song… also lavender and basil)

Deities: Crone or witch goddesses like Hecate, Morgaine le Fay and Freya, also Hades, Persephone and other death-related deities. Spirits and deities associated with Day of the Dead celebrations. Perhaps Baron Samedi, depending on the culture and specific beliefs…

So, how will you incorporate these spooky moon correspondences into your Halloween?

  • Go to sleep with amethyst under your pillow, see if you have psychic dreams or are contacted by an ancestor
  • Smudge your house with sage to create a good atmosphere for your party
  • If you plan to use ouija boards, runes, tarot or other divination devices, keep quartz nearby to heighten psychic energy
  • Make pumpkin soup with rosemary and sage for protection, abundance and general deliciousness
  • Use witch-related decorations (cauldrons, brooms, black cats, pointy hats) to honour Hecate

Have a hauntingly good evening!

31 Days of Halloween – Day 24: Orange and Black

Orange and black are the official colors of Halloween. This is news to no one, but in case you’ve never considered the symbolic nature of these colors, here’s some information:

Orange

Orange is the color of pumpkins, candy corn and autumn leaves. Maybe orange is the color of stars, certainly it’s the color of the setting moon. Candlelight is orange. So are marigolds and chrysanthemums, flowers popular in Day of the Dead celebrations. You can see how this color has particular resonance at Halloween.

Orange is the color of personal power. It represents will, creativity, happiness, vitality and luck. It represents light.

Incorporate orange into your Halloween celebration by placing citrine, amber, coral, carnelian or goldstone on your altar. Decorate with pots of orange mums. Put orange candles in your windows to welcome back the dead.

Black

Black is the color of night. It represents mystery, death and sometimes evil. Soil is often black, like the dirt shoveled on top of a coffin but also like the life-giving fields where crops are planted. It is the color of everything occult or esoteric. Black, more than any other color, represents the Halloween season because it symbolizes the dark half of the year that begins on November 1st.

Black is not actually a color, rather, it is the absence of color. Black absorbs the entire color spectrum of a light wave and in doing so absorbs all its energy. This is why clergy members, witches and other spiritual people often wear black, their robes absorb energy that they can then transmute into something good (a prayer, a spell, etc.) This is where the idea that black banishes negativity comes from.

Incorporate black into your Halloween celebrations by hanging up paper bats, spiders and cats. Divine with a scrying mirror (a black glass mirror used to see symbols, shapes and sometimes spirits.) Wear your witchiest clothing.

Personally, I like to wear a lot of black eyeliner.

‘Tis the season

XOXO

31 Days of Halloween – Day 20: Witch Movies

I love witches in all their forms, but especially in the movies. My favorite witch-related movies, for your viewing pleasure:

  1. The Craft – light as a feather, stiff as a board
  2. Blair Witch Project – there’s nothing scarier than the woods in autumn
  3. Witches of Eastwick – bohemian Cher
  4. Practical Magic – The Aunts
  5. The Witches – sexy Angelica Houston
  6. Suspiria – lots of bloody ballerinas
  7. Hocus Pocus – yabos
  8. Mists of Avalon – Angelica strikes again
  9. The Crucible – Winona Forever!
  10. BeastlyMary Kate Olsen as the gothed out Enchantress
  11. Sleepy Hollow – who’s got a kiss for the pickety witch?

31 Days of Halloween – Day 19: Vampira

Image via Tumblr.com

Vampira was the sexy hostess of the late-night horror movies aired on Los Angeles television during the 1950′s. She was created and portrayed by Maila Nurmi, a Finnish actress and model.

Nurmi was a character of the highest order. Pre-Vampira, she was the model for some of Alberto Vargas’ pinups and she even worked with Marilyn Monroe. She portrayed Vampira in Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space (widely considered the worst film ever made) and later in life  she claimed to contact James Dean from “beyond the veil.”

Nurmi passed away at the age of 85 in 2008. She’s buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Find out more about Vampira and Nurmi here.

Vampire teeth are often left by Nurmi’s grave. (Image via Wikipedia)

31 Days of Halloween – Day 15: Candy

Did you know candy corn was invented waaaaaay back in the 1800′s? True. Story.

31 Days of Halloween – Day 14: Spooky Poetry Part 2

More spooky, fun Halloween poetry. You can view Part 1 here.

Upon Each Samhain by David O. Norris

I miss you most upon each Samhain
When the boundary turns to sheer
I wait until the veil is parted
At the ending of the year.
Sweet spirit, as you walk among us
At the tolling of this eve
I see your face beyond the sunset
And hear your voice upon the breeze.
In the glowing of the candle
From the shadow on the wall
I watch for you in every movement
And hear your footsteps in the hall.
Can you sit and spend the evening
As the portal opens wide?
Ancestral dead, I bid you welcome.
Most recent dead, I pray, abide.

When you come I sense your presence
I put my hand out in the air
A moment, then, we stand united
Palm to palm while waiting there.
I miss you most upon each Samhain
When the boundary turns to sheer
We share these hours until the dawning
Then bid farewell until next year.

Untitled by David O. Norris

Druids would not know this night
Witches would in wonder gaze
To see the festive costumed souls
Who dance about the night in play
Where ancient magic ruled the land
Children’s laughter fills the soul
Yet in this way the night is honored
Much like the ancients long ago.

The Witches’ Song by Elizabeth Coatsworth

Early, early, comes the dark,
something moves along the ditches.
Was that singing? Hark, oh hark
to the chanting of the witches!

Come, sisters, come,
let us screech at the windows,
let us blow out the candles
and breathe on their hair,

we’ve shadowed the moon
and called up the night-wind,
the owl and the cat and the broom
will be there.

Let us turn their blood chill
with the sight of our faces,
let us touch them with fingers
both crooked and cold,

and then shrilly laughing
we’ll be off to the hill tops
to frisk and to frolic
as always of old.

Did you hear them? Were they saying
scary things to shake the knees?
Or was that but breezes playing
in the dry and brittle trees?

The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury

It’s big, it’s broad…
It’s broad, it’s bright…
It fills the sky of All Hallows’ Night…
The strangest sight you’ve ever seen.
The Monster Tree on Halloween.

The leaves have burned to gold and red
the grass is brown, the old year dead,
But hang the harvest high, Oh see!
The candle constellations on the Halloween Tree!

The stars they turn, the candles burn
And the mouse-leaves scurry on the cold wind borne,
And a mob of smiles shine down on thee
From the gourds hung high on the Halloween Tree.

The smile of the Witch, and the smile of the Cat,
The smile of the Beast, the smile of the Bat,
The smile of the Reaper taking his fee
All cut and glimmer on the Halloween Tree…
